AC 255. Brussels New Mobile Suit Museum
”And here we are at the last part of this guided tour. This is a genuine artifact from a Gundam. We don’t know what it did, but it was left behind in Siberia after the first detonation of Unit 01.”
The museum guide, a bright-faced you lady who managed to look genuinely interested in everything she was conveying to the guests, stepped aside to let the guests study the small item encased in glass.
“It says here that unit 01 was repaired after Siberia. If this thing was left behind, it can’t have been very important for proper performance, can it?” one man asked.
“Perhaps, perhaps not. Eyewitness accounts state the unit 01 was performing far below its previous standard in its first fight afterwards. We’re fairly certain that this belonged in the cockpit of the mobile suit, but like I said, exactly what it did isn’t clear at this point. However, I can tell you that nothing similar has been found in other types of mobile suits.”
“So it might actually have been what gave the Gundams the upper hand?”
“Well, I think the gundamium played a part as well, but yes, it could very well be. Something made the Gundams much more maneuverable than other suits.”
The guests stared with varying degrees of interest. Eventually, they drifted away, leaving only a man in his seventies and a young girl.
“Grandpa, how come no-one mentioned the pilots as the reason the Gundams were so much better?”
The elderly man chuckled. “Well, no-one has managed to figure out who the Gundam pilots were. In time, they convinced themselves that there were a series of pilots, and they didn’t have that much effect on the handling.”
The girl frowned. “That’s silly. If that was true, the Gundams might just as well have been mobile dolls.”
Her grandfather smiled fondly at her and tousled her hair. The girl giggled a little before growing serious again.
“How come you were fighting so badly in the first battle after Siberia?”
The old man sighed. “Well, I was still injured…but mostly, it was a pointless fight and my heart wasn’t in it. It’s a good thing your grandmother intervened.”
“What is that thing, really?” The girl pointed at the object in the glass exhibit box.
“It’s just a flashlight from the toolkit.”
She blinked. “It’s a lamp?”
“More or less.”
