Challenge 018

Story title: Gather Them All in a Row
Author: Ingvild
Word count: 378
Rating and warnings: Sorta depressing
Characters and/or pairing: Noin
Summary: Noin and her students.

They’re standing there all in a row, her students. Lines upon lines of young, bright-faced mobile suit pilots ready to take on the world.

She walks past them, matching name to face. Kendrick Anaheim, age 23. Older than her, but he still seems so young. A bit of a flirt, but never serious.

Giuglio Boscorelli, age 20. Also older than her, just barely, and this one is from Toscana, only a few kilometres from where Noin herself grew up. Occasionally, he would get a care package from his mother, and he’d invite her to share in the wine and cheese and prosciutto of home.

Sandra Heyworth, age 27, insisted on being counted as “one of the lads” to the point where many seemed to forget she was a woman. Noin has never seen then need for that herself, but can respect that Sandra does.

Simen Mortensen, age 19. Same age as her, but she still refers to him as “the baby” in her mind. An innocent from a small village on the island Jylland, better at making the mobile suits hum after a good repair job than actually pilot them.

Alex.

Mueller.

Her failures.

Alex and Mueller were executed by Zechs for being insane and shaming the service.

Simen Mortensen died in battle against the Alliance holdouts, possibly Sally’s unit.

Sandra Heyworth, spaceborn as she was, joined White Fang in space and died fighting for them – against the joined Gundam/Taurus force.

Giuglio Boscorelli’s suit was damaged and crashed into the cliffs during Oz’s takeover.

Kendrick Anaheim died during Wufei’s bombing of the base. Noin was holding him in her arms as he breathed his last.

Her students, gone, most of them killed by people she now considers friends. Some might have died in battle against Noin herself. Here they are, all their names on white stone, lined up here at the memorial for those lost in the war. Next to them, people they fought with, and people they fought against. Their remains have been given to their families, but their names are still here, stark black against the white background, cold and impersonal unless you have enough empathy to see the tragedy.

Age 27. 23. 20. 19. Names on a stone post.

Noin salutes them and moves on.

Man, I just want to hug her. :(

I like ("like") how, even though they were taught by the same teacher at the same academy, half of them died by *each other's* hands. That really says something about the state of affairs in the AC world.
