Story title: Not Apart, Just Not Together
Author: Ingvild
Word count: 435
Rating and warnings: Safe for everyone
Characters and/or pairing: Relena/Heero
Summary: Takes place right after Endless Waltz. Heero left. Relena stayed.
She knows that he didn’t stay long after it was all over. He checked himself out of the hospital right after he woke up, and was gone when Relena came back after her public address.
She doesn’t worry. There is some part of her that is annoyed that he has, once more, left without saying goodbye, but she knows that this is Heero, and he will be all right. Somehow, he always is.
She also has no doubts that he will come back. Somehow, they have changed roles. Where Relena once ran after him, Heero is now the one who comes to her. He is always there when she needs him. So Relena will continue with her life, confident that she will see Heero again someday. For now, that is enough. She is patient. She can wait.
He is looking for something. He doesn’t know what it is, but he has no doubts that he will know when he finds it. All he knows is that what he’s looking for isn’t a reason to live. He already has that, and it is tied up with the young politician he watched from behind the curtains on the balcony before leaving.
He also doesn’t think that it’s salvation he’s looking for. He was saved the moment he let go of his gun and decided never to kill again. A new mission, perhaps, but he thinks that this, as well, is tied up with Relena.
He thinks that maybe, he is looking for a method of some kind. Heero knows how to fight, how to kill. He thinks he also knows how to die, even though he hasn’t managed it so far. But somehow, he doesn’t think that Relena would be happy if he died for her, so he is looking for a way to live for her instead. He has managed it once before, to change his conviction and do something against his instincts because he didn’t want her to be sad. So now he is searching for a different way to live.
Relena is working, spending her days in transit, in her office or in the public eye. She always seems calm and relaxed, always thoughtful. Somehow, having someone she is waiting for has given her a sense of inner peace.
Heero is staying away from the people who know him, but he’s not actually avoiding him. He is trying to interact normally with normal people, trying to find the right way to live. Somehow, he thinks he’s doing well in his search because he is waiting until he is ready to be with her again.
