Challenge 022

Story title: Looking Closer
Author: Ingvild
Word count: 529
Rating and warnings: Safe for everyone
Characters and/or pairing: Doctor J, Heero, mention of Relena
Summary: Heero’s reporting back after his first mission and about his stay at St. Gabriel’s.

”…and that’s all. This concludes my mission report.” Heero leaned back, and looked at Doctor J in a way that was too nonchalant to really be called expectant, but which somehow was, anyway.

J grinned wryly. “You really stole parts off his Gundam?”

Heero shrugged. “It was convenient. It got me the parts I needed that couldn’t be repaired, and it kept him from following me.” He frowned. “You never told me there were more pilots than just me out here.”

J smirked. “There are. You’ll meet them eventually, but for now, just focus on your current missions.”

“Roger that.”

“How is your cover working, by the way? Mingling nicely with the others your age?”

Heero gave him a wary look. “Was I supposed to?”

J sighed. “It would help you seem like a normal fifteen-year-old. Try to unwind a little, boy. If you’re too uptight, you’ll attract attention.” He smiled, or tried to – it ended up looking like a smirk again. His face simply wasn’t meant for smiling. “This is the first time you attend school. How is it?”

“It’s...not what I expected,” Heero admitted. “The students seem more interested in idle gossip and intrigues than actual study. And they keep complaining about homework. They think there’s too much of it.” He frowned. “I don’t see it. I’ve never done homework before, but even with missions as well, and having to catch up on the stuff I missed on my mission, I have no problem getting all of my homework done.”

“Most young people don’t have your self-discipline.” J paused. “Any problems with the schoolwork?”

“Their history books and social science class is very Earth-oriented,” Heero said, leaning back and crossing his arms over his chest. “You’d think the Colonies didn’t exist, the way they go on about these things.” He paused, then added, almost grudgingly, “most of them.”

“Oh?”

“There’s one girl in my class who seems reasonably up-to-date on things. Of course, that’s because her father’s a minister.”

“Relena Darlian?”

Heero, who had been drifting a little into his own thoughts, snapped back to focus completely on Doctor J. “How did you know that?”

J waved his clawed hand dismissively. “I have looked up all your classmates. She’s the only one related to a politician there.”

Heero frowned at him. If J squirmed at all under his intense gaze, it was lost in static. “Is that really all?”

“Why do you ask?” J’s face wrinkled a little, like he was trying to innocently widen his eyes behind his eyeglasses, but most of the expression was also lost in static.

Heero didn’t fall for it. “Why would you even mention her?”

J shrugged. “Just showing an interest in your situation, boy.”

Heero glared hard at him, but didn’t say anything more. In his own way, J seemed to be giving him hints towards what he might look into further. More homework, in a way.

Heero thought he was beginning to understand what his “classmates” meant about too much homework. He thought that maybe, looking closer into Relena Darlian might unveil more about himself than her, and that might be too much for him to handle right now.

That. Exactly what you said. (They're so hilarious when they fail to act like human beings. *is evil and sadistic*)
