Challenge 023
Story title: the Quester
Author: Ingvild
Word count: 383
Rating and warnings: Safe for everyone
Characters and/or pairing: Trowa
Summary: Trowa has his fortune told.
“This is your card for the past.”
Trowa looks at the fortune teller, raises an eyebrow, and looks back at the card. “It seems a little easy, to designate a clown as the Fool.”
The fortune teller laughs. Despite being there through all of Trowa’s experiences with the circus, this is the first time they have spoken. Trowa wonders if it is because he finally, after more than a year, is ready to have his fortune told.
“The fool is not what you might think of as a clown. The Fool is probably the most versatile card in the deck.”
Trowa raises both eyebrows this time. “Go on.”
She does. “It can be the highest card in the Major Arcana, or the lowest. It stands out because where the other Major Arcana are usually numbered with Latin numerals, the Fool, if numbered at all, is often numbered with the Arabic numeral 0.”
Zero, Trowa thinks. The Zero system, which gave him his memories back. The highest, him undercover in a position of power. Or lowest, wandering around a strange colony without his memories.
“The Fool is always trying to learn more. This card represents the quest for knowledge. It shows how one starts with nothing, and is open to all impulses around.”
Choosing to become a Gundam pilot for no other reason than that he liked the suit. Refraining from killing Quatre because Quatre shouted at him. Seriously considering self-detonation just because Heero had done it before him.
“The Fool is often depicted with animals…”
Ah, that one is a no-brainer.
“…either as his companions, or about to attack him.”
…maybe not. Animals attacking him? Maybe they aren’t animals, maybe they’re mobile suits.
“Also, the Fool is usually depicted standing on a precipice, not noticing or not caring that it is on the brink of falling.”
Ah, well, that describes his whole life, really.
“Being the Fool is a good thing,” the fortune teller finishes. “It means you are open to learning, open to new impulses, and ready to move forward in your life. Just be careful not to fall into the chasm.”
“What if I’m finished being a blank slate?” Trowa asks.
The fortune teller smiles enigmatically. “Well, then. This was the card representing your past. Let’s turn over the second card.”
