Challenge 043
Story title: Beginnings
Author: Ingvild
Word count: 462
Rating and warnings: Safe for everyone, I think
Characters and/or pairing: Une
Summary: Set between the end of the series and Endless Waltz. Une checks out her new office, and does some introspection.
Une looked around the empty room which was to become her office. It was large, empty, and impersonal. She sighed softly to herself. This was where she was supposed to run the entire Earth Sphere’s primary peacekeeping force.
What in the world had she got herself into?
She pulled out her tablet PC from her shoulder bag, flipped open the cover and took a long, narrow-eyed look at the list there. Today was the day when the headquarters for the newly formed Preventers stood ready, and Une, as the unit’s commander, had just finished with her first inspection. So far, everything looked fine.
There were gyms and locker rooms and a gun range. There was a large cantina which connected to a gleaming kitchen – preparing the food at the HQ reduced the risk of someone tampering with it.
There was a medical ward, labs, and storage for equipment. Holding cells and rooms for questioning. And there were offices. Row upon row of offices, which would soon fill with agents ready to do whatever Une needed them to do.
It was terrifying.
She, who had almost blown up a space colony in order to flush out one single terrorist, would now be the premier peacekeeping authority of not only Earth, but also the colonies? She, who had participated in the assassination of political leaders, would now protect others from the same? She, who had only recently managed to reconcile the very different parts of her fragmented mind would now have the highest, non-elected authority in the Earth Sphere?
She didn’t know whether to laugh or cry.
She looked down at the list on her tablet, lifted her pen and put a mark next to the line saying “inspection passed”. Check. The building was ready.
Was she?
She opened a new document, looked around the empty office, and started sketching. Desk here, chair behind it, and a few other chairs for anyone visiting her office. A filing cabinet against one wall, a bookshelf next to it. Most information was electronic now, but she liked having some things tangible.
Better fit in a paper shredder as well.
And on this wall, some decoration. Sparse, in order to keep the serious austerity of the office, but still...
Une folded her long legs under her and sat on the floor, staring at the wall. A plaque, perhaps? It would be fitting to put up one with the names of some of those lost in the last war. No-one would question its presence in the room – others would see it as a reminder to herself of why she was doing her job.
Une would see it as a reminder of what she had once been capable of, and what she had to be careful never to do again.
