Challenge 044
Story title: Days to Remember
Author: Ingvild
Word count: 400
Rating and warnings: Safe for everyone
Characters and/or pairing: Relena, Une, Mariemaia, Heero just barely
Summary: From the end of the series to after Endless Waltz. One year, three women, four birthdays.
”Next time, give it to me in person,” Relena calls to Heero, who looks in her direction and makes the barest movement of acknowledgement before leaving. Relena allows herself a gentle smile and a moment to savour the warm, happy feeling inside her. She is sixteen today, and the boy-young-man-in-making standing the closest to her heart, has just shown that he thinks of her. She allows herself to feel sixteen for a moment. Then, she squares her shoulders and returns to studying the papers that she needs to present and have approved in order to make the Mars Terraforming Project official.
Une does not celebrate her birthday. For one thing, she is much too busy with the formation of the new peacekeeper force, the Preventers. For another, she has managed to successfully hide which date her birthday falls on. She is twenty years old today, and she chooses to mark it by pouring herself a glass of red wine and visiting Mr. Treize’s grave before going home. He always made a point of procuring the strangest, most outlandish of presents for her, all surpassing the previous in strangeness and luxuriousness. Today, for him, she makes do with a bouquet of roses.
Mariemaia’s birthday goes by in a flurry of activity. Her grandfather does not allow her to hold a normal birthday party, but as she has no friends her own age that does not bother her enough that she feels the loss. Instead, she meets with the tailor who has brought along her specially fitted uniform. Her grandfather allowed her to choose the designs, and she feels the thrill when she puts on hers and looks in the mirror. She is going places now. She is eight years old today, and before she turns nine she will rule the Earth Sphere.
It is April again, and Relena is again considered one year older than she was the previous day. Like last year, she does not have any plans for a celebration. She speaks to her mother on the phone before going to her office. She accepts Lady Une and Mariemaia’s well-wishes over vidphone while in the car on her way, smiles and nods at the people on the way offering their congratulations, and arrives at her office already going through her schedule mentally – and stops short staring at Heero standing at her desk with a poorly wrapped present in his hands.
