Summary: The Sank Kingdom fell twice. Pagan saw it happen both times.

He was there the first time the Sank Kingdom fell.

The king and queen stayed behind, trying to negotiate or at least slow down the invaders, while Pagan bundled up the little princess, took the prince by the hand and ran out the secret escape door. He saw off the prince to Khushrenada for safekeeping, and delivered the princess to the Darlians. And then he went back to Sank.

The castle still stood, but it was badly damaged. Several of the staff had hidden in the woods close to the castle, but more than half of them had died. This was probably because they had tried to hold off the soldiers who came. For a pacifist country, Sank truly had many willing to fight for it.

Two of them were the king and queen. Pagan found them in the throne room, both of them almost bled out. No-one had been to touch them yet. This was probably the invaders’ intent – they wanted their own people to find them, to feel the despair of seeing their monarchs bereft of life.

Pagan moved carefully up to them. He lifted a shaking hand and carefully closed their eyes. Then he left to alert the proper authorities. Let others deal with the press, the funerals, the clean-up.

Pagan drove away. He drove for hours until he got to a small, twisting mountain road. And then he drove up it, too fast but not caring.

He stopped on the top, parked and got out. There, in the dark, with no-one else around, Pagan dropped to his knees and wept.

After that, he drove back to where he had left the young princess. The Darlians didn’t question him, didn’t ask what had happened. By that time, it had hit the news anyway. They just welcomed him into their house and told him to stay for as long as he needed. Not being used to charity, Pagan suggested that they take him on as a butler.

He spent the next years watching young Relena grow. He saw her turn from a toddler to a young, serious girl. He listened to her worries and tried to answer her questions. He became her driver when her parents got her a car instead of the bike she had asked for.

He watched as her safe, secure world was shattered after she’d found the Gundam pilot on the beach, and became her greatest support as she started claiming her heritage. He was there when she went to Sank to start her school and rebuild the kingdom. And he was injured on duty.

He watched from the hospital bed as Romefeller invaded and Relena dissolved the country and surrendered herself in exchange for the safety of her students and the citizens of Sank.

They had come full circle, Pagan thought. The country had risen and then fallen again. But this time, no lives were lost.
