A/N: Yeah, I think I’ll have to explain this one. ingvild is put together of the name “Ing”, another name for Freyr, the Norse god of crops and fertility, and hildr meaning “battle”.

This is Mars.

Mars is a planet of red dust. Even now, years after the Terraformation project started, Mars is till mainly red dust. It is impossible to venture outside the Dome without a spacesuit, and even inside the great glass structure people carry a tank of emergency oxygen with them. It is simply too risky not to do so. Air was the first thing that was created here, after the model the colonies have been using for nearly two centuries, but the system is not yet stable enough that the new Martians will trust their lives to it.

They’re a strange bunch, these new Martians. Most of them are old soldiers who didn’t have a place to go after the war ended. The new ESUN government tried their best to include them, but it is not easy to simply adapt to society again. The Terraformation project is just as much a refuge for people who have nowhere else to go, as it is a real attempt at creating a new habitable world.

They are a mix of Earthlings and Spaceborn. The people who came from the colonies are more used to living within a man-made structure that is the only barrier between them and the cold of outer space, but the ones from the Earth are more used to the gravity of a planet. In general, the Spaceborn are handling the situation better psychologically, while the Earthlings are handling it better physically.

Preventer Lucretia Noin and her silent partner are here on Mars to make certain that peace is held. At least, that is the intent. But they have found that this is not quite as necessary a job as one might think. At least now, in the beginning of the project.

When everyone is fighting to create a small patch of fertile soil, they do not have the energy for mischief.

Zechs cut his hair the fourth day after they arrived. It was simply too cumbersome to take care of, especially since he has never liked vibro showers, and water is scarce here. For the time being, they are collecting big blocks of ice out in space and bringing them in. Some day, hopefully, they will get an ecosystem going, but for now all water has to come from the outside. There is talk of setting up an ice-mining operation on Jupiter’s moon Europa, but for the time being it is simply not cost-efficient or, indeed, possible.

They are all here, struggling together. Few of them were farmers before, but all of them are now. Even the ones who are here to fill other positions, like doctors or upholders of the peace, have at some point pitched in on the fields. They are doing battle with Mars’ red soil, struggling, waiting…

…fighting for that first glimpse of green.
