Ficdump part 1!

Story title: Check
Author: Ingvild
Word count: 428
Rating and warnings: Safe
Characters and/or pairing: Relena, Dorothy
Summary: Two women playing chess and talking.

”So what is your next move now, Dorothy?”

“Now now, miss Relena. You must wait and see.”

“I meant in your life, not in the game.”

“So did I.”

Relena peered over the chess pieces at her…friend? Opponent? Acquaintance? Antagonist whom she was at speaking terms with? Really, while she was certain that there were many, many words to describe Dorothy Catalonia, she was at loss for which ones she should use to describe what Dorothy was to her personally.

No matter what she was to her, though, if there was one word that described Dorothy perfectly in any situation, it was ‘frustrating’. What was she thinking inside that devious head of hers? The pale eyes revealed nothing, and her half-smug half-smile was firmly in place. Relena watched as one long-fingered hand moved towards a chess piece – the queen – and moved it diagonally across the board.

Dorothy raised one bifurcated eyebrow in a clear “your turn” gesture. Relena narrowed her eyes at her.

“Interesting move.”

“Indeed.”

Relena reached for one knight, moved it two steps ahead and one to the left. Took one of Dorothy’s towers.

“That was an interesting move on your part,” Dorothy observed. “You’re moving one of the safeguards for your queen. You have been playing very safely so far. What made you change your style?”

Relena shrugged. “The queen piece is the most versatile. It can’t be utilized properly if I’m too set on protecting it. Besides, caution is well and good, but occasionally you have to take risks to move ahead.”

“In real life as well as chess,” Dorothy said, the half-smile on her lips somehow transferring to her voice.

“If I win this game, will you tell me what you’re up to?” Relena looked firmly at Dorothy, compelling her to meet her eyes.

“Why are you so interested?” Was that Dorothy Catalonia being actually evasive? Would wonders never cease?

“I’m concerned.”

“About me or everyone around me?”

“Both,” Relena answered without hesitation. Dorothy, who had begun to reach for a chess piece, stopped abruptly.

“Oh miss Relena, you are truly magnificent,” she breathed.

Relena blinked. “Huh?”

Dorothy smiled and stood, smoothing out non-existent wrinkles from her skirt. “Never mind, miss Relena. I believe I shall forfeit this match. I can’t see how I could possibly win it.”

“So you’re giving up?” Relena didn’t bother to hide the disappointment in her voice.

Dorothy chuckled. “Only this time. Believe me, I will return, stronger than ever.”

“In chess or real life,” Relena asked, half in amusement.

Dorothy, however, turned to her and said: “Either.”

*sigh*
*laugh*

As lovely as Dorothy is to write, she'd be an absolute pain to live with. This is a perfect illustration. It's never safe to assume what she's saying doesn't have a double meaning of some kind. Love it. XD
