”What do you think your adoring voters would say if they could see you now?”
Relena glared at Treize Khushrenada. “You’re dead.”
Treize shrugged. “And you’re dreaming. Answer the question.”
Relena sighed and looked down at Heero slumbering next to her, one lock of her hair intertwined between his fingers. She smiled gently and moved her hand to stroke his forehead, but stopped, unwilling to wake him up.
Treize smirked. “I told you, you’re asleep. You could bring in a marching band, and he wouldn’t wake up, because in the real world, you’re lying down next to him, not sitting up.”
Relena frowned. Treize sighed. “Look, you’re wearing a nightgown, right? You weren’t wearing anything when you went to sleep. And he’s holding on to your hair. With you sitting up, you should feel the tug, but you’re not. Why? Because this is a dream.”
“It’s a strangely lucid dream,” Relena noted.
“Oh, that’s my fault. I wanted to talk to you.”
“Why?”
“Because I like you, Relena. I think you’re interesting. I like watching you and the choices you make. Your romantic relationship with this young blockhead might have frustrated me somewhat – really, what young people are this hesitant in this day and age – but it was also interesting to watch.”
“He’s just not very well socialized,” Relena defended her boyfriend. “And I didn’t want to scare him away. Besides, I wasn’t entirely certain this was a good idea…”
“Why not?”
She didn’t want to answer, but was unable not to. “Because I’m a public figure. A relationship with me is going to bring him into the spotlight, whether he wants it or not. There are still people who remember his face from his Gundam pilot days, he could get in trouble if they realize he’s still alive.”
“Not to mention, your political career might suffer,” Treize noted.
Relena dismissed his comment with a wave of her hand. “I can deal with that. Harshly put, I’m good at making people think the way I want them to. I’m more worried about Heero. The scrutiny he’ll come under, dealing with my peers…I’m afraid it’s going to be hard on him.”
Treize sighed and shook his head. “You’re underestimating him. He’s not stupid; he knew all that going into this relationship. Obviously, he thought you were worth it.”
Relena blushed. “You’re not acting like a dream,” she said accusingly.
Treize shrugged. “Maybe my spirit is roaming this earth, or at least, is bound to something on it. Maybe I have been watching over you.”
“In that case, why aren’t you watching over Mariemaia?”
“Who?”
Relena blinked. “So Dekim was lying? She isn’t your daughter after all?”
Treize stared. “Dekim…Barton? Leia’s father?”
Relena nodded slowly. “And Mariemaia is Leia’s daughter.”
Treize faltered. “She…I…I have to go.” He disappeared.
Relena blinked. The strangely lucid dream world was gone. She was lying next to Heero in her bed, her hair twined between his fingers.
She sighed and closed her eyes, going back to sleep.
