Challenge 047
Story title: Observation
Author: Ingvild
Word count: 500
Rating and warnings: Safe for everyone
Characters and/or pairing: Mariemaia, Noventas, Darlians
Summary: The AU is back! 1, 2, 3 Mariemaia observing people she interacts with. A lot of people meet here who didn’t meet in the series.
Father taught her to read people. He taught her to look at them and notice their body language, their clothing, their looks. He taught her to listen to them and analyse their voices and what they didn’t say as much as what they actually said. He taught her to observe.
Marshall Noventa had kind eyes and a grandfatherly expression on his face. He never condescended to her because she was a child, and never spoke disparagingly of colonists. Mariemaia quite liked him, both because of his outwardly behaviour, and because she rather thought that he meant it. There was no guile in his voice, and when he talked to her he looked her straight in the eyes and never changed his voice or his vocabulary from when he spoke to adults. She had expected duplicity from a Marshall in uniform who preached peace, but instead she got honesty and integrity.
Vice Foreign Minister Darlian also spoke of peaceful solutions and diplomacy and meant it, but there was something else about him. He was hiding something, she was sure of it. It wasn’t the message he was giving – that was genuine. No, it was something about how he looked at Duke Dermail and the rest of Romefeller with even more disgust than the rest of the Alliance politicians. And there was something about the way his face closed off when Noventa suggested that the two of them bring their young relatives, Darlian’s daughter and Noventa’s granddaughter, to meet Mariemaia next time.
Relena Darlian and Sylvia Noventa were both older than her, but Mariemaia didn’t think they were more mature. They had lived much more sheltered lives, and it was obvious that their father and grandfather had not immersed them in high politics the way Mariemaia’s father had. Still, they were hardly stupid. Relena in particular seemed to be chafing under the reins. She listened intently to everything that was being said, and was never afraid to argue. Mariemaia noticed that her father seemed to enjoy that, and Relena’s father seemed disturbed as his daughter drew attention to herself arguing with Dermail.
Zechs Merquise, her father’s close but still mysterious to her friend, didn’t speak much. She couldn’t read his facial expressions either because of the mask he always wore. She had to settle for trying to read his body language. She knew that he didn’t know how to deal with her existence, and had mostly tried to politely avoid her when he came to visit her father. But it was fascinating how he seemed to both try to ignore Relena Darlian, and yet always stood close enough to listen to ever word she was saying. Here was true dichotomy in person.
Mariemaia noticed all the little details. She learned that Dermail was a blustering, selfish man, and Noventa was noble but too trusting. She learned that Darlian and Merquise were hiding something, and that Relena was about to bloom and take on true responsibility. They were all ready for something more.

That's... an incredibly depressing thought. Considering they're TWICE Mariemeia's age. Somebody give that girl some dolls to play with.
