Story title: Changing Days
Author: Ingvild
Word count: 418
Rating and warnings: Safe for everyone
Characters and/or pairing: Catherine, Trowa
Summary: Catherine reflects on how life’s changed after Trowa came to the circus. Set during the early episodes of the series.
It would probably surprise most people, but days at the circus are fairly monotonous. Catherine wakes up at seven each day and gets up to fix breakfast. By the time she’s done, Trowa returns from feeding the lions.
He’s only been part of the circus for a few weeks, but he’s already become part of their lives. Catherine feels like her life before Trowa was shoes, and now he’s new, solid laces. The shoes worked well before, but they work even better now.
After breakfast, they have practice. Trowa has impressed the line dancers and the trapeze artists, and they’re leaning on him to become part of the acrobatics team. So far, he has resisted. He seems content to let her use him as a target while he’s wearing a clown suit.
After practice, one of three things happens. It they have a show that day, they spend the time cleaning up the circus grounds and making everything look nice and pretty before the show. Costumes are checked for dirt or damage, the animals are prepped, and some of the crew hit the town to advertise.
Sometimes, they have no show. Those days are spent on practice, figuring out new routines, chatting.
Trowa has been there for a few of those days, and five out of six of them he’s spent somewhere else. Catherine doesn’t know what he’s doing on those days, but he comes back looking exactly the same – except for some strange bruising along his shoulders, as if from some sort of harness.
The third type of days are spent travelling to another location. Catherine has been doing them for so long that she can pack and unpack the circus tent in her sleep. Her caravan is always ready to go, and she has no big pieces of equipment, so she’s usually free to help others with their packing.
Trowa helped with the tent before they were ready to go, but then he disappeared, only telling them that he would get to the next location on his own.
Come to think of it, the days haven’t been quite as routine since Trowa joined the circus. She doesn’t know where he is a lot of the time, and he shows up again out of nowhere, never giving a hint to where he has been. Once, he brought a stranger along – a stranger with dark eyes and a darker mood.
Catherine looks at him, and thinks that the day is probably coming when he’ll change everything they know.
