Author: Ingvild
Word count: 565
Rating and warnings: Mention of consumption of alcohol
Characters and/or pairing: Mariemaia, Une, Sally (slight Une/Sally)
Summary: The beer was a gift. The effect is unknown.
”Can I have some?”
”No.”
”Why not?”
”It’s alcohol. You’re fourteen. You figure it out.”
Lady Une of the Preventers gave her young ward a pointed glance. Mariemaia pouted, but didn’t argue any more. Secretly, Une was quite pleased that she’d asked. It had been a very slow process, but over the six years that they’d been living together, Mariemaia had slowly but surely begun to act more like a normal person. She was still far too intelligent and precocious for her age, but then again, that was only to be expected. Besides, children who matured too early could still grow up into well-balanced people as well, just look at the Gundam pi...
Une paused in her thoughts. The Gundam pilots were leading fairly normal lives now, but no-one could accuse them of being well-balanced. She went over her mental list of young people who had been spectacular in their teen years. The pilots were out. Miss Relena…clever, and one of the friendliest and nicest people around, but she was fairly manic about causes at times. Lady Dorothy was terrifying no matter what she set her mind to. Noin and Zechs, both of them officers at a young age, but Zechs still struck her as an unbalanced individual, and Noin…Well, Noin could pass as normal.
Une briefly wondered where she fit in. Only twenty-six, single parent of a fourteen-year-old, Commander of the only officially sanctioned pseudo-military force in all of ESUN, bi-monthly recipient of a psychiatric assessment meant to ensure that her now firmly grounded, well-balanced personality didn’t start to slip into her previous DID…
“Coma-fusion is not a recognised mental healing method,” Une mimicked her psychiatrist, not realising that Mariemaia and Sally were whispering to each other.
“She’s been staring into nothing and sipping beer for nearly half an hour, now,” Mariemaia whispered. “I don’t think she’s even noticed that she’s started drinking, and now she’s on her third bottle.”
“She didn’t seem to notice when I entered either,” Sally whispered back. “Which, given how penetrating the sound of your doorbell is, is pretty weird.”
“I thought you made sure that the beer was safe,” Mariemaia said, not bothering to whisper anymore. It was obvious that Une wasn’t listening.
“I sent a sample to the chemists at the forensics department. None of their tests showed anything unusual. We wouldn’t be letting anyone consume something that was delivered as a gift without checking first.”
“Then why is she acting so weird?”
Sally squirmed. “Well, that’s why I came over here. There was nothing wrong, but there were some weird things. It won’t poison you, but it could act as a low-level truth serum.”
Mariemaia stared at her flatly for what seemed like ages, before her face broke into a big grin. “Quick, go ask her if she loves you.”
Sally blushed crimson. “No, near as we can tell, it only makes the drinker be honest with themselves.”
“Even better. Go ask her, hurry!”
Sally blushed even more. Mariemaia was honestly impressed, she had no idea it was possible to turn that colour.
“No,” Sally said, “I think I’ll just have to take that beer away from her.”
Mariemaia watched her walk over to Une and sighed. All in all, she was rather happy to still be underage.
A/N: That’s the second time I’ve had Une under the influence of mind-altering substances. What is with me?
